Welcome to Green School South Africa - "thrive with purpose"

Welcome to a school where creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship flourish. Welcome to a school that inspires and equips its students and community to thrive with purpose, now and in the future. Welcome to a campus that ignites the senses and creates a sense of wonder in adults and children alike. Welcome to Green School South Africa.

Green School South Africa is committed to educating for sustainability in a progressive, student-centred way. We are focused on preparing young people to thrive in a changing world. Our carefully researched educational approach is designed to ignite a love for lifelong learning, a joyful, wonderous journey, and teach our students the skills we believe are required to thrive now and in the future.

We believe that each child learns differently and with 1 teacher for every 10 students, we are committed to providing a personalised approach to our students.

We’re part of the global Green School movement, launched in 2008 by Green School Bali. Green School South Africa will be the third school in this global network, along with Green School New Zealand.

From January 2021, we’ll offer Kindergarten (ages 1 to 6) and Grades 1 to 8 – growing annually to become a school that educates up to Grade 12. Our highly qualified teachers bring rich life experiences into the learning environment, teaching in both English and Afrikaans.

A location chosen with love for nature

Our school is situated close to Cape Town in the verdant Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Surrounded by majestic mountains, this area is celebrated for its rich plant life and natural beauty.

Our campus is situated on 8 hectares of land, where indigenous and vegetable gardens, orchards and grain fields serve as outdoor extensions of our classrooms. These gardens not only teach us about maths and chemistry, but re-establish the tie between us as humans and our nourishment, and connect the school community to the land.

The campus is designed to world class sustainability standards and includes solar power as our renewable energy resource, a strong focus on water with climate-specific water management systems that treat, infiltrate and reuse all water resources on site. Our biophilic design aims to contribute to our school community’s sense of place, delighting and inspiring students and visitors for generations to come.

Building skills for the future

In addition to academic skills, Green School South Africa teaches skills for the future. Our sister school in Bali has, over the past 11 years, reseached and defined the Green School Skills that form the backbone for all we teach.

These are:

  • Think creatively – Be original, be imaginative
  • Activate – Feel empowered and empower others. Take action. Make a difference.
  • Adapt – Bend like bamboo
  • Think critically – Dig deeper, ask why, make connections.
  • Be aware – Look within, figure yourself out.
  • Collaborate – Confident alone, stronger together. Find your way.
  • Think in systems – Step back and see the whole picture
  • Communicate – Process, organise and coherently express ideas
  • Solve problems – Figure it out, go for it, identify problems

Joyful learning rooted in educational excellence

Green School South Africa provides high-quality teaching in a supportive learning environment. We offer a comprehensive, well-rounded and cross-disciplinary learning experience that encourages the physical, emotional, intellectual and expressive development of every child. Beyond teaching proficiency in maths, English, Afrikaans, science, humanities and additional languages, we also provide experiential classes in entrepreneurial studies, environmental studies, arts, health and wellbeing. Most importantly, we celebrate the wonder and magic of learning, bringing joy into the school environment.

The calibre of our curriculum, along with our international reputation as a Green School, enables our students to transfer to other educational institutions, locally and globally. Green School Bali graduates have been accepted at over 100 different universities around the world, including universities from Australia, Europe, Northern Amercia and Asia. The global network of Green Schools opens up opportunities on a global scale to the students of Green School South Africa.

A wall-less learning environment

Rather than being contained within four walls, our learning environment embraces nature and integrates with the outdoors, inspiring students to create bonds with their environment and think more expansively about it. The natural, holistic setting inspires fun, exploration, curiosity and creative expression. It encourages students to chase adventure, connect with each other and their community, and genuinely enjoy coming to the school every day.

Educating for sustainability

Our future-focused, environmentally-grounded curriculum encourages young people to address the challenges that face the world today, and empowers them to make our planet sustainable. We nurture an ethical, creative and entrepreneurial mindset that is needed to create a positive future for our planet. Our love for the natural world is evident at every stage of the learning journey, both inside and outside the classroom. With our sister school in Bali named the “Greenest School on Earth”, we leverage best practices as we build a school community that’s committed to living sustainably. While others may say that our approach is visionary, we believe it’s in fact necessary.
