Foundation Phase: Grade R – 2

Ahoy me hearties! We would like to invite all Grade R to Grade 2 explorers to come and join us on a fun-filled month-long adventure exploring the seven seas! We will be looking into the history of ocean explorers as well as having a bit of pirate fun!

We will be delving into detail in both literacy and numeracy by using our thematic approach to learning. Tessellations in flags, measurement in building, counting our loot and working on our mapping skills. We will be playing battleship and have scavenger hunts. Keeping a captain’s log of our adventure and making lists of items needed (like vowels and sounds or books and shoes).

In this age group, abilities are sometimes quite different. Reading in a first language, reading in a second language, and understanding mathematical concepts vary greatly. We therefore present two groups, called Fern and Protea. The Fern group is still uncurling and waking up to the wonder that is language and maths. The Protea group has already developed stronger roots and can survive in tougher conditions. Please choose the group that your child belongs to.

Course descriptions

Mathematics

We will be looking at numbers, operations and relationships in different ways. Number concept and problem solving will be lots of fun in our thematic approach.

We will be going on a quest to look for patterns not only in Maths, but all around us, like in flags.

Shapes will be cut open like fish heading to the braai and we will look into symmetry and tessellations.

Come play with time and do measurement in out-of-the-box ways.

Maybe we’ll get carried away with data handling as scavenger hunts are so much fun!

In our course planning, we have incorporated the following:

  • Numbers, Operations and relationships
  • Patterns, Functions and Algebra
  • Space and Shape (Geometry)
  • Measurement
  • Data Handling

English

Listening and speaking will be central to most of our lessons and we will investigate the finer detail of English. We will take on reading by deconstructing it first and making sure that there is a firm, phonetic foundation in place. Letters, recipes, messages in bottles and captain’s logs will be written. This will all happen under the umbrella of our thematic approach, making it so much fun! For the younger explorers we will also take a look at letter formations, which will involve activities to develop fine motor skills.

In our course planning, we have incorporated the following:

  • Listening and speaking
  • Reading and phonics
  • Writing
  • Handwriting
  • Thinking and Reasoning
  • Language Structure and Use

Afrikaans

  • Skryf
  • Handskrif
  • Dink en redeneer en taalstruktuur en -gebruik
